What were barbers doing 100 years ago?

We have already talked about this in more detail earlier, and today we will dwell in more detail on a specific stage that deserves it, a kind of "golden age" of barbershops. After all, it was exactly 100 years ago that the flowering of culture began. Barber schools began to open (the first was in Chicago, later this initiative was quickly picked up by other American states), the industry reached a new level. In addition, barbershops have become full-fledged men's clubs with a remarkable reach.

Popularity demanded new quality standards, such as previously unseen disinfection of instruments: frying and immersion in various solutions, as well as sterilization with hot boiling water in front of customers. The professionalism of the masters grew, and more convenient equipment appeared. The craft was developing rapidly. Such previously unseen elements later became commonplace and the new norm.

To do it "as before" became a bad manner, you just risked losing customers. Barbershops became a kind of social centers, where you could relax, have a heart-to-heart talk and break away from working everyday life. Art became commercial. And people were sincerely happy to join it. It was the stage when the very "classic" barbershop in the modern sense appeared.

It would seem that here it is - the heyday, which leads to a new round of the whole culture, from now on everything should go in a new way...

However, the Gillette company thought otherwise. And just in the same period they invented the first T-shape shaver. Since then, this accessory has become indispensable for almost every gentleman. Further more: the company did not stop there and invented an electric shaver, which was sold in more than a million copies, which finally shook the position of men's salons. A safer and cheaper alternative came to the fore.

Subsequently, two world wars and economic decline played their role, and there was not much interest in barbershops until the 60s, with the era of hippies and the fashion for long hair. But this is a completely different story...
